The following post is #sponsored. The opinions are my own.
It is my Universe, after all.
In case you read the title and said “enu… what?” I understand. When I first heard the name, my reaction was the same. I had never heard the word before. Enuresis is the fancy (read: medical) term for bedwetting; a word I knew all too well.
Yep, bedwetting. The kids start growing up and parents wipe their brows in relief when potty training is over. Whew! I remember that moment. Except, at night, we didn’t seem to be quite finished. No problem, right? Everyone told us that it was normal for night time wetting to continue a little while after training.
Great. Except… a little while had passed. He was getting older and bigger and more independent. We were approaching sleepover age and frankly, I was worried. This can be a hard place to be. When I was a kid, parents thought this was a reflection on them or their child. “Why weren’t they trained?” “He’s too old to be doing this!” “Why can’t she take care of herself?” There was a lot of blame and frustration and tears.
Luckily, our understanding of enu… enur… bedwetting has come a long way. And with more luck (or blessing) I have a great mom and a great pediatrician. They helped me relax and understand that barring any medical conditions (which he had none — thank goodness!) this was a fairly common issue that he would outgrow. I just needed to support his nighttime needs while his body caught up with itself.
Beyond the calming voice of grandmothers, it’s nice to know that the good old internet has a lot of support out there, too. Pampers UnderJams has a wonderful site providing advice and peace of mind from Dr. Laura Jana.
Knowing all this takes the feeling of failure out of the experience. Neither kiddo or Momma (or Daddy!) are doing anything wrong. And they have great products to support this transition. As they get older, kids don’t want to feel like they’re wearing diapers. And they don’t have to! Pampers UnderJams are cloth-like with a low-waist so they provide great absorbency discreetly. The NightLock ultra absorbent core offers protection against leaks. Whether at home or in a sleeping bag next to friends, they can feel confident without embarrassment.
