I Haven't Forgotten

In past posts, I have shared that I was in New York, 11 years ago this morning. I remember the big, beautiful, blue sky that turned a deathly grey. I remember the fear and I remember how badly I just wanted to go home but couldn't. I remember all that.I remember more, however.I remember a moment when all the petty squabbles seemed a thing of the past. We were all just Americans, not Republican or Democrat, black or white. (Heck we were all just humans. As Americans, we are not alone in suffering a terrorist attack -- many countries have been targeted. For example, London just marked the dismal 7th anniversary of the London Underground bombings.) In this election year, it sometimes seems like a distant memory, but I do remember.I was not attacked because I am liberal, my friend was not attacked because she is a conservative. We were equally attacked as Americans. And we need to remember that. Democrats and Republicans are not enemies -- we are all Americans who want the best for our country and fellow citizens. We want a prosperous, free, and fair society. We may have very different ways that we believe are best to accomplish these goals, but we really want the same things. On this day, stained by the blood of innocents and heroes alike, let's remember that. I haven't forgotten.
