Big Hearted Family Project #1

See these kids? They have really big hearts. Now some days you wouldn't know it, like when they are a sharing the back seat on a road trip, for example. Or when we go to Target and they get a Berenstein Bears style case of the Gimmes. Even on those bad days, however, really big (beautiful) hearts are beating inside. We try to talk about those who have less than we. As tight as my budget can be as a military SAHM, we are still mightily blessed. My children have no needs. They have a safe, happy home. They have a great school. They are fed. They are well-dressed (thanks to a very thrifty mommy). They have no needs.More than that, however, there are few things that my children want that they don't have. No, we have never made it to Disney. And double no, they cannot have have everything they see advertised. I tweeted the other day about my daughter's series of  "I want that!"s to every single commercial she saw. But despite the matching set of "maybe"s and "okay... we'll see"s. and occasional "no"s, these two kids disappear into rooms overflowing with toys. So many that they often have trouble picking them up.So we decided to share! Well, I decided and we talked about it. We talked about that there were boys and girls who didn't have one toy to play with, much less a room full. We talked about that their mommies and daddies might be sad because they couldn't give their kids all the things that they want. And we talked about that this was something they could help.  And after that discussion, they were ready to share. So much so that we made these really cool buckets. Sonny-Bunny and Little Diva decorated each. We are cleaning out closets so I'm sure that they will be filled up soon. But more than that, we are keeping the buckets in their closets  as a reminder to think others and find ways to  give. I'm hoping that they will start to fill them up on their own.Check out Big Hearted Families for other ideas for teaching our kids to have charitable hearts!
