What's Happening -- Anything Goes, The Review
Tuesday, I was lucky enough to attend the Opening Night for the Lexus Broadway in Austin production of "Anything Goes".Wow! What a spectacular song an dance show! I don't know if I've seen a better dance chorus in my theatrical career. The tap dance numbers (which are huge) were spot on and led by a very strong cast. The story is an old one -- boy meets girl. Girl gets on boat. Boy risks everything to follow her. Boy gets girl. The sets are lush as we roll through ship's deck to state rooms and back again. And of course, the costumes are beautiful. It's a glamorous glance back at a time when women wore hats and "white tie" meant something entirely different than "black tie". Visually, it was almost as intoxicating as it was to hear. The first act is definitely stronger than the second story wise but never was there a moment not filled with humor or a beautiful song. And again, I have to come back to the dancing. My guest and I were in complete awe as the numbers would begin with two or three dancers and grow into a stage-filled extravaganza. So you have a couple of days left. What are you waiting for?
