A Lost Letter to a Lost Time
I love it when a book takes me away to different time and place. This is especially true if the place involves winding corridors and sweeping skirts full with crinolines. Recently, I received a book that whisked me away to such a place.
I received a copy of the book for the purpose of this review. All opinions are mine. It is my Universe, after all.
The Lost Letter is a classic tale of star-crossed lovers, each having suffered tragedy and each believing wrongly that they have been forsaken. A secret lock of hair in ribbon, a war in India, and yes, a wayward letter all play a part in this Victorian tale.Sylvia Stafford is our heroine. A beautiful young woman who has embraced her life as a governess after a tragic fall from society when her father committed suicide. Her constellation partner has had a double reversal of fortune. When Sylvia last passed a secretive moment with the gentleman, he was simply Colonel Conrad, third in line to the Earlship. After being wounded and disfigured in India, he sadly returns to find himself Earl as both his father and brother have passed.
A Victorian Tale for a Modern Escape
These two misbegotten souls are now brought together after several years. Each has suffered loss and each wrongly believes the other has forsaken them. The premise follows a fortnight orchestrated by Lady Harker, the well-meaning if irritating sister who has decided to play re-matchmaker.I don't want to share too much as part of the book's charm is wondering how this knot of misunderstandings held tight by two proud souls will finally untie itself. This Sunday evening, f you are still feeling the loss of Downton Abbey, turn off the television and open up this letter to a time gone by. It's a delightfully romantic turn around the Victorian corner.
