The ZACH takes a bite out of Dracula

I love spooky.

I especially love reading spooky books. Stephen King. Dean Koontz. And Bram Stoker. And in case that name means nothing to you, he is the author of Dracula.

Oh, yeah, yeah. You knew that, right? And you are sure that you know Dracula. But, I am going to challenge you on that.

Just about every adaptation of the story, including the film named "Bram Stoker's Dracula" takes such liberties with the book that it is hardly recognizable.

To start, Mina is a badass. And the men treasure her as a virtue, not just for her beauty. And I am happy to report that in Stephen Dietz's adaptation, the ZACH Theatre production gets that.

Dracula, Austin, theatre, ZACH Theatre

I received free admission for the purpose of this review.
All the opinions are mine. It is my Universe, after all.

For time and size of cast, there are differences in the play from the book. Many might miss Van Helsing, but on the whole, the true story of Dracula is there. Austin audiences will not be disappointed by this production, It has laughs and jump scares alike, with a solid cast and a lovely set.

The timing obviously could not be better for this season opener. With Halloween at our front door, what better way to get into the mood then an evening with the greatest spooky character in literary history? And on Halloween Night, there will be an extra special performance with the Vamps and Vixens Masquerade with DJ’s, dancing, drinkulas and lite bites!

The show is recommended for 13 and above. I am happy to report that the show is definitely appropriate for young teens (unlike many of the film adaptations).

And then, please, Please, PLEASE get them to read the book. It's still one of my favorites!

So go and get your bite on at the ZACH!
