Fun in the Cold
I recently saw a friend on Facebook ask if people liked sit around drinking cocktails by the pool vacations or get out and explore vacations?
In my head, I answered, “both”.

It is my Universe, after all.
During the winter, the pool options are cut significantly. Well, I should only speak for myself. I hate cold water. I grew up on the Gulf - we call it bath water as far as temp. When people say they say heat their pool and the number doesn’t start with an 8, than to me it isn’t heated. But, as per usual, I diverge.
Colder weather doesn't mean an active vacation around the winter holidays can’t happen. In fact, now that I live in Western New York I am surrounded by snow and ice and have found it a great source for plenty of fun activities.
Go for a Walk
Hiking in the other three seasons seems more obvious than winter. I get that. But I have been learning, it is possible to hike all year with research on where to go and how to do it safely. If like me, you're not a seasoned winter hiker, try a guided hike. This is not the place to “wing it” or you might end up on the wrong side of a Dateline Missing episode. On the fun side, hiking with an expert means exploring places we wouldn’t otherwise visit on our own.
Walking, on Skis
When I think winter sports, I think skiing. My kids are eager to try snowboarding. While some years ago, I careened down a few runs, I am currently considering cross country skiing this winter. It offers all the benefits of a winter hike but I can go faster and further on a pair of skis. Snowshoeing is a similar activity that can also allow you to explore snowy trails at your own pace. There are so many destinations to choose from, both within the US and elsewhere.
Who let the Dogs Out?
For those looking to try something unusual during your a winter vacation, there is dog sledding. While it can be a whole lot of fun, do NOT be fooled, the dogs don’t do all the work. It's pretty tough physical work for the human. Standing on the sled and directing the team takes a lot of effort. There are plenty of short experiences lasting a day or just half a day to try it out. Longer excursions that last multiple days are harder, and for those who have really decided they are ready and committed.
While my pup is never going to pull anything other than heart strings, she is now and forever, my Snow Dog.
Do It All
Whether because traveling with family or because you want to do EVERYTHING on your vacation, consider looking for a multi-activity option. It could be skiing, hiking, looking for the Northern Lights, snowmobiling, or even learning about local wildlife or people. A multi-activity winter vacation can be a win for families like min who can’t make up their minds.
Living in Western New York has inspired my family to spread our wings and enjoy our new climate and play a little. I hope these ideas have inspired you, too, to get active during your next winter vacation.
