What's Happening - Kinky Boots, The Review
Last week I shared my excitement about the musical "Kinky Boots" coming to Austin. Well, I am happy to report that the show did not disappoint! The music, the cast, the sets, the story... everything was wonderful.Unlike some of the shows I have seen recently, I knew none of the music going in other than that it was composed by Cyndi Lauper. It is a terrific score ranging from big, flashy drag show performances to tender songs about what it is to be misunderstood. The show is touching, tender, and crazy, wild fun!The Harvey Fierstein script tells the tale of a young man, Charlie, reinventing himself as he reinvents his family business. A chance meeting with Lola/Simon brings light and direction into Charlie's world. The two men find that they have more in common than differences as they look at the weight that the expectations of society, and more specifically their fathers, has put on them.It is not too late to see the show! It's playing this weekend and I highly recommend it.
